Quick Rules for Reading Military Time

Military time uses a 24-hour clock and is commonly written without a colon. The first two digits show the hour, while the last two digits show the minutes.

  • For 0000 through 1159, the time is usually in the morning.
  • 1200 means noon, or 12:00 PM.
  • For 1300 through 2359, subtract 12 from the hour to find the standard PM time.

For example, 1730 means 5:30 PM because 17 minus 12 equals 5.
